Although using an oven makes cake baking easier and faster, it shouldn't deter you from baking if you can't afford it. Before we dive into the methods, let’s talk about a few common reasons people turn to oven-free cake baking.
- Cost of electricity: This issue of the cost of electricity is the main reason I'm opting to bake with my gas stove. Electricity cost in Lagos is almost becoming unbearable since the state government introduced the system of bands A, B, C, & D. Even the power supply is not stable, and the cost is way too high.
- Living in a tiny apartment & no space to keep an oven.
- No access to an oven ( for students or travelers)
- Exploring traditional or alternative cooking techniques: Some people just like to explore different kinds of cooking techniques even when they have an oven.
Equipment Needed to Bake Cake with Gas Stove or Charcoal:
- Deep non-stick pan or aluminum pot with a lid
- Iron stand—This iron stand can be any metal object that you will place the cake on while baking it.
- Cake pan—any size that will fit inside the pot you want to use

How to bake a cake with a pot in 3 easy steps

Step 3: Bake the cake.
How to bake a cake from scratch without an oven or mixer:
Step 1: Making the batter
In a big bowl, pour in the flour, salt, and baking powder. Mix the dry ingredients together.
In another bowl, put in the butter and sugar. Mix together until soft and fluffy.
In the flour bowl, put in the eggs, the milk, and the oil and mix together.
Note: In case you do not want to use oil, make the salted butter 150 grams
Add the sugar-butter mixture to the batter and mix until smooth.
Lastly, add the flavor of choice and mix until well incorporated.
Grease the cake pan (you may also add parchment paper) and pour in the batter.
Step 2: Prepare the pot.
Place a deep pot on the gas stove (you can use any deep pot with a cover). Put salt on the bottom, and put any iron stand inside (you can use a stove pot stand). Preheat the pot for 5 minutes before putting the cake inside.
Step 3: Bake the cake.
Bake the cake on low heat for 30 to 45 minutes, depending on the size and thickness of the cake. Check using a skewer or toothpick; if it comes out clean, the cake is done.
Useful tips for baking a cake with a gas stove
- Use low to medium heat to avoid burning.
- Do not open the pot cover too often, as it affects the baking process.
- Pour some salt in the pot to regulate the heat, and it also protects the pot from getting burnt (blackened).
- Keep track of the baking time or set an alarm if possible so that the cake doesn't end up too dry.
Conclusion:
Baking a cake without an oven is an opportunity to explore different baking techniques. Once you master the basics, you can get creative. The possibilities are endless. So next time you're craving a sweet homemade cake and don’t have an oven, remember—great cake doesn’t depend on the tool (oven), but the technique (and a little love).
